PICCOLA, GRANDE MUSICA “MERRIE MELODIES": “The cheerful melodies” of the brilliant Raymond Scott performed live by a lively sextet

Teatro Niccolini

Presented By Amici Della Musica

The Merrie Melodies (“Cheerful Melodies”) constitute a series of cartoons distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures between 1931 and 1939. The Merrie Melodies were a sort of precursor to today’s music videos, as each cartoon featured a song from Warner’s music catalog. Music, therefore, was not merely background, but high-quality, significant recordings.
In this catalog, the music of Raymond Scott stands out for its brilliance and variety. In our project, we reversed the original situation. We chose a series of cartoons where Scott’s music had been used as background or soundtrack, and did the exact opposite: we made the cartoons the frame for the majestic and ingenious music of our beloved Raymond Scott.
