The Performance

Described by many as “the perfect comedy”, Oscar Wilde’s masterpiece was first staged by our company in 2000 and ran for two seasons, with Geppy Gleijeses as John Worthing, Lucia Poli as Lady Bracknell and Mario Missiroli directing.

Gleijeses now brings the play back to the stage, this time as director. The original title itself plays on words, while Wilde’s language is rich in misunderstandings and double meanings that create comic situations and place the drawing-room world of Victorian society under a magnifying glass. Above all, the play explores the boundaries between truth and falsehood, both in events and in the identities of its characters.

The comedy invites us to reflect on the ways in which conventions continue to influence our lives and our choices today.

At the time, the play had not been presented in a major production for many years. The result was an extraordinary success. The production still holds the attendance record at Teatro della Pergola in Florence, where even “listening-only seats” with no view of the stage were sold, as well as enjoying great success at Teatro Goldoni in Venice, Franco Parenti in Milan and many other theatres.

Now, directed by Geppy Gleijeses and featuring the magnificent Lucia Poli, we return to this jewel of world theatre in a new production, approaching it almost as if it were ours alone.
