The evening will be dedicated to raising funds for Smile Project ODV to restore the theatre space at the Abraha Bahta School, Eritrea’s only residential school for blind children.
In an age of aesthetic perfection, social media, bullying and fear of being “different,” this timeless story speaks directly to us. Marking the 150th anniversary of Andersen’s death, The Ugly Duckling returns in a contemporary adaptation, where Fabio Canino’s wit brings themes of inclusion, diversity and self-acceptance to life, surprising and entertaining audiences of all ages.
But beyond the happy ending lies a deeper truth: not everyone turns into a swan, and feeling inadequate, excluded or different can make life difficult. This performance is dedicated to those who don’t fit society’s expectations, who face the judgment of others and struggle to find their place in the world. Ultimately, it is dedicated to all of us.
The Ugly Duckling explores the value of diversity and everyone’s right to find their place in the world. A message that resonates with the mission of Smile Project ODV, which has been working in Eritrea since 2015 to promote inclusion, independence and new opportunities for vulnerable people.
An evening where theatre becomes an opportunity for solidarity, turning a universal message into a tangible act of support.
Recommended for ages 14 and up.
