A BBC Next Generation Artist 2022, Silver Medal winner and recipient of the Audience Prize at the 16th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2019, winner of the 2018 Starker Foundation Award and Third Prize at the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 2017, Santiago Cañón-Valencia is considered one of the most promising cellists of his generation.
Born in Bogotá in 1995, his most important musical mentors have included Henryk Zarzycki in Colombia, James Tennant in New Zealand and Andres Diaz in the United States.
He is currently continuing his professional training with Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt at the Kronberg Academy for young soloists.
Cañón-Valencia is a passionate advocate for music and has been entrusted with the world premiere of Carlos Izcaray’s Cello Concerto with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, the premiere of Jorge Pinzón’s Cello Concerto Rapsodia a los 4 Elementos at the 2019 Cartagena International Music Festival, the Colombian premiere of Ginastera’s Cello Concerto No. 2 with the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia, and the premiere of Gulda’s Cello Concerto in Auckland, New Zealand, with the Auckland Chamber Orchestra.
